After over a decade since GTA V launched, Rockstar Games finally dropped the first trailer for GTA 6 in December 2023, and the internet collectively lost its mind. Here is everything we know so far.
The Setting: Vice City is Back
GTA 6 is set in a fictional version of Miami called Vice City, returning to the sun-soaked, neon-drenched location fans last visited in 2002. The trailer showed sprawling beaches, swamps, highways, and a dense urban downtown that looks more alive than anything Rockstar has built before.
A Historic First: A Female Protagonist
For the first time in the mainline GTA series, players will control Lucia, a female protagonist. She appears to be partnered with a male character in what Rockstar describes as a Bonnie and Clyde style story. This is one of the biggest creative shifts in the franchise's history.
Release Window
Rockstar has confirmed a 2025 release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC version is expected to follow later, consistent with Rockstar's usual release pattern.
What the Trailer Showed
A living, breathing world with dynamic NPCs reacting realistically
Swamp areas outside the city suggesting a large open map
Social media and livestreaming culture woven into the world
A level of visual detail that pushed next-gen hardware to its limits
Why It Matters
GTA V made over $8 billion in revenue and is still one of the best-selling games every month. GTA 6 carries expectations that no other game release can match. The pressure on Rockstar is enormous, and based on the trailer alone, they appear to be delivering something generational.
